How to Write a Resume That Canadian Employers Actually Read

If you've been sending out applications and hearing nothing back, your resume might be the problem. In Canada's competitive job market, hiring managers spend an average of 7.4 seconds on an initial resume scan. Here's how to make those seconds count.

1. Start With a Strong Professional Summary

Skip the "objective statement." Canadian employers want to see a professional summary — 2-3 sentences that highlight your experience, key skills, and what you bring to the table.

Bad: "Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills."

Good: "Operations manager with 8+ years of experience streamlining logistics for Canadian manufacturing companies. Reduced operational costs by 23% and managed teams of 15+ across three provinces."

2. Optimize for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems)

Over 90% of Canadian companies with 50+ employees use ATS software. If your resume isn't optimized, it might never reach human eyes.

Key tips:

  • Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills)
  • Include keywords from the job posting
  • Avoid tables, graphics, and fancy formatting
  • Save as PDF unless the posting specifies .docx

3. Quantify Your Achievements

Numbers catch eyes. Instead of listing job duties, show results:

  • "Managed social media" → "Grew Instagram following by 340% in 6 months, generating $45K in attributable revenue"
  • "Handled customer service" → "Resolved 50+ customer inquiries daily with a 98% satisfaction rating"

4. Tailor Every Application

A generic resume is a rejected resume. For each application:

  • Mirror the language from the job posting
  • Reorder your bullet points to highlight the most relevant experience
  • Adjust your professional summary to match the role

5. Keep It Concise

For most Canadian job seekers:

  • Under 10 years experience: 1 page
  • 10+ years experience: 2 pages max
  • Academic/research roles: CV format is acceptable at 3+ pages
