5 Interview Mistakes Canadian Job Seekers Make (And How to Fix Them)

Landing an interview is a win. But too many candidates sabotage their chances with avoidable mistakes. After coaching hundreds of Canadian job seekers, here are the five errors we see most often.

Mistake #1: Not Researching the Company

"Tell me what you know about us" is not a trick question — it's a test of your preparation. Yet over 40% of candidates can't answer it well.

The fix: Spend 15 minutes before every interview:

  • Read the company's "About" page
  • Check their recent news or press releases
  • Look up the interviewer on LinkedIn
  • Note 2-3 things that genuinely interest you about the company

Mistake #2: Giving Vague Answers

When an interviewer asks "Tell me about a time you handled conflict," they want a story — not a theory.

The fix: Use the STAR method:

  • Situation: Set the scene
  • Task: What was your responsibility?
  • Action: What did you specifically do?
  • Result: What happened? Use numbers if possible.

Mistake #3: Not Asking Questions

"Do you have any questions for us?" is your chance to show engagement. Saying "No, I think you covered everything" signals disinterest.

The fix: Always have 3-5 questions prepared:

  • "What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?"
  • "What's the team culture like?"
  • "What are the biggest challenges facing the team right now?"

Mistake #4: Underselling Yourself

Canadians tend to be modest — great in social settings, not great in interviews. This is your time to advocate for yourself.

The fix: Practice saying your accomplishments out loud. Use "I" instead of "we" when describing your individual contributions. Own your wins.

Mistake #5: Forgetting to Follow Up

A thank-you email within 24 hours of your interview can be the difference between getting the offer and getting ghosted.

The fix: Send a brief, personalized email to each interviewer:

  • Thank them for their time
  • Reference something specific you discussed
  • Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role
